Economics in Action

Partnership UCLA/Alumni Career Programs and the UCLA Department of Economics hosts the Economics in Action Conference every quarter. The conference allows undergraduate students enrolled in various Economics courses to explore the real world implications of their coursework, while also practicing their team building, public speaking, and presentation skills.

For Students

Every quarter, Economics professors determine whether their course will participate in the Economics in Action Conference. Therefore, the courses that participate will vary each quarter. Please note that only upper-division Economics courses are eligible to participate.

If your course participates in Economics in Action, your professor will notify the class early in the quarter, with additional instructions coming from Partnership UCLA/Alumni Career Programs. If your course is participating in Economics in Action, you will get in to groups of 4 – 5 students, identify a topic to explore, and prepare a 20 minute presentation to a panel of alumni judges during the conference. The conference typically takes place in Weeks 8 or 9 of each quarter.

For Alumni

Alumni are invited to participate as judges for these student presentations. As an alumni judge, your role is to observe multiple student presentations and provide the students with feedback. Your analysis might provide acknowledgement of the strengths of their presentation and constructive feedback for the areas of their presentation that need improvement. Overall, the goal is to provide students with an opportunity to practice and strengthen their public speaking and critical analysis skills.
